Dental Veneers

What should you know about Veneers?

Dental veneers, also called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates are a great option for those who want to restore their natural smile. Dental veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells, designed to cover the front surface of teeth to esthetically enhance the appearance while fixing some teeth issues.

These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth to enhance their color, shape, size, or length. Veneers help fix:

Teeth color: to cover teeth that are discolored because of root canal treatment; stains from medication, excessive fluoride or other causes.
Irregular teeth: to correct teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped and have craters or bulges in them.
Damaged teeth: that are worn down, decayed, chipped or broken.
Gap Closure: to close gaps between the teeth.

Dental veneers can be made of porcelain or resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers. However, our dentist will discuss the best material for veneers after discussing with the patient.

Procedure for Dental Veneers

On your first visit to the dentist, you will be examined to see if veneers are the right choice for you. An x-ray will be taken to evaluate the teeth condition. Subsequently, an impression of your mouth and teeth may be taken. The next step will be to prepare your teeth for veneers. Your dentist will remove about ½ mm of your enamel which will be about the same thickness of the enamel, that will be bonded to your teeth. This may be done with a local anesthesia, as required.

The model of the impression will be sent to the dental laboratory for customizing the veneers to your fit, which might take 2-4 weeks for permanent veneers. The veneers will be bonded to your teeth with a special cement and then treated with light to harden the bond and fix it permanently.

Getting dental veneers may require 3 visits to the dentist – for a consultation and to make and apply the veneers. A follow-up visit will be required to assess the teeth a couple of weeks later.
