What should you know about Teeth Cleaning (scaling and polishing)?
Professional cleaning of teeth by a dentist or a certified dental hygienist is a crucial part of good oral hygiene and is needed periodically to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. The aim of teeth cleaning is to remove plaque (soft, sticky bacteria infested film), tartar (calculus) and stains that accumulate on the teeth, despite the routine brushing ( with an interdental brush) and flossing (with water-flosser).
The calcium that is present in the saliva causes the plaque to get calcified to form the hard tartar. The only method to get rid of this tartar is to undergo scaling.
Dr. Koya’sDental Clinic recommend teeth cleaning every 6-12 months to reduce the possibility of gingivitis progressing to periodontal disease. Even between routine cleanings, good oral hygiene at home is vital to prevent tartar build-up and gum disease.
We use specialized instruments to gently remove these deposits without causing harm to the teeth or its enamel. All dental instruments are put through a stringent cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing procedure to ensure safety and quality control.
Cleaning Process: Using mild vibrations from an ultrasonic instrument, large pieces of tarter are loosened and subsequently mists of cool water are sprayed to wash away loose debris. Once larger pieces of tarter are dislodged, we switch to finer instruments called scalers to remove smaller deposits on the teeth and smooth the teeth surfaces.
Each tooth is scaled individually to ensure that tarter is completely removed, root surfaces are smoothened and teeth surfaces are polished.Teeth cleaning is painless. The cooling mist of water, mild vibrations, and the pressure felt during scraping usually do not cause any discomfort. Some people experience mild sensitivity after getting their teeth cleaned, but this sensation subsides within a day or two, with the use of a desensitizing toothpaste. Most dental cleanings last between 30 minutes to an hour, on an average. After a professional tooth cleaning, you will notice your mouth feels fresher and teeth look brighter.
Benefits of Teeth Cleaning
The scaling and polishing which are part of the routine teeth cleaning, bring several advantages:
1.Brighter, whiter smile after removal of the dull stains on your teeth).
2.Clean teeth and healthy gums help prevent gum disease and future tooth loss.
3.Early detection of any oral lesions and timely treatment. Mouth ulcers and other lesions (white patches) are painless and their presence is often discovered during a routine cleaning or a routine dental check-up. Oral cancers are curable if detected at an early stage.
4.Reduce the risk of gum diseases and heart strokes or heart attacks with routine cleaning. Cardiovascular diseases are linked to gum diseases.
5.Early detection of hidden cavities, signs of broken fillings, chipped teeth and fractures if any.
