Dental Extractions

What you need to know about Dental Extractions?

If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, your dentist will try to fix it with a filling, crown or other treatment. However, a tooth may need extraction if it has been damaged beyond repair and cannot be restored, especially when associated with severe pain.

A dental extraction or tooth extraction is an oral surgery performed to remove teeth for various reasons such as severe tooth decay, gum infections, dental trauma or dental injuries.

Other reasons for extractions may include impacted teeth (stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) causing recurrent infections of the gum; and cosmetic reasons when the teeth are crowded and need straightening. In orthodontics, if the teeth are crowded, healthy teeth may have to be extracted (often bicuspids) to create space for the rest of the teeth to be aligned.

The Tooth Extraction Process

There are two types of extractions:

A simple extraction is commonly done by general dentists. In a simple extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth (with an instrument called elevator) and removes it with extraction forceps. Often simple extractions are done under local anesthesia (using an injection). You may or may not receive drugs to help you relax.
A surgical extraction is commonly done by oral surgeons and general dentists too. It is a complex procedure that involves a tooth that may have broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet. In such cases, a small incision is made into your gum and a small part of the bone around the tooth may be removed.

Extractions under Sedation or General Anesthesia: Adult patients with specific medical conditions, behavioral problems or developmental delays needing multiple teeth extractions and in young children, the teeth are removed under general anesthesia given intravenously (through a vein).

The Benefits of Dental Extractions

1. Saves healthy teeth and tissue: Extracting the damaged tooth can prevent the infection from spreading to the healthy tissues and neighboring teeth and save your smile too.

2. Saves you from discomfort: An Infected tooth can cause severe discomfort and when it can’t be restored, removal is the only option that will relieve you from severe pain. Removing the painful tooth can help you have a pain- free and productive day-to-day life.

3. Replacement of new tooth: If your tooth is severely infected, damaged, or a root canal treatment has failed and restoration is not possible, you still have an option – replace the extracted tooth with a dental prosthetic and enjoy excellent oral health again!
