What you need to know about Dental Bridges
Bridges are an effective, fixed replacement solution for those who have one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges cover the gaps created by missing teeth and prevent remaining teeth from shifting and moving into these gaps.
The timely replacement of missing tooth or teeth is essential to prevent disorders such as bad bite, gum disease or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and premature aging.
Most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices unlike dentures, which are removable devices. Bridges and Crowns are fixed or cemented onto the existing teeth or dental implants, that can be removed only by your dentist if required. The teeth that serve as anchors for the bridge are called abutments and the artificial tooth attached to these abutments, is called ‘pontic’.
Depending on the location of the missing teeth, its function, aesthetic or budget considerations, our dentist can recommend the bridge that best fits your need.
The process of fixing Bridges: Before a dental bridge can be designed for you, our dentist will first assess the health and strength of the adjacent teeth that are selected for supporting the false tooth. The abutment teeth are prepared in your first visit. Our dentist their contours the teeth on both sides of the gap and takes impressions of your teeth. A temporary bridge will be made for you to protect your exposed teeth and gums, while your bridge is being made.
In your second visit, your dentist will remove your temporary bridge and place the new permanent bridge after checking and adjusting it, to achieve a proper fit. Your dentist may schedule multiple visits to check the fit of the metal framework and bite (which varies with each individual). Your dentist may cement your permanent bridge with a temporary cement, for a couple of weeks, to make sure it is fitting properly. When your dentist is certain that your permanent bridge fits comfortably, the bridge is permanently cemented over its supporting teeth and into its place.
The materials used to fabricate dental bridges are metal, ceramic and zirconia.
There are 3 different types of dental bridges, based on the availability of the supporting teeth:
Traditional bridges consist of two abutment teeth and one or more pontic (false tooth) between them. Traditional bridges are the most popular types of bridges and the materials used are porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramics.
Cantilever bridges are used when there are supporting teeth on only one end of the missing tooth or teeth. This is not a very popular method and is not recommended.
Resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge is made of plastic teeth and is supported on either side by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to the backs of your existing teeth. This is a popular method to replace a single missing front tooth
The Benefits of Replacing Missing Teeth with Dental Bridges
If you have a missing tooth, a dental bridge will fill the gap between the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Some of the benefits of using dental bridges include:
Restore your smile and your ability to speak and chew properly
Maintains the shape of your face and prevents premature aging
Preventsbite disturbances by preventing the drifting of the remaining teeth
Bridges generally last from 5 to 15 years or even a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups (once a year) at the dentist office. Good oral hygiene can be maintained by brushing (with an interdental brush) twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing (using water flosser)under the bridge by using special dental floss. Chewing of hard and crunchy foods such as ice cubes is best avoided, to make your bridge last longer.
